The use of information technology is growing rapidly in all areas and fields of work. However, its use in the construction industry remains different from other sectors according to a set of constraints, such as the special nature of the sector, lack of awareness about its applications and the need for training which requires extra investments.

This paper aims to identify more deeply the reality and barriers of using information and communication technology (ICT) in the construction industry. To achieve this, we carried out an investigation of current situation of ICT capability in construction companies. This was done by surveying 69 of various professions in the construction industry (project managers, engineers and assistant engineers and technicians).

The research resulted that the level of using ICT in construction is good in some functions of construction industry, but it doesn't get all advantages of its services, this is because of many barriers such as the time required to master the use of information technology and the inappropriate work environment for the use of all available applications, in addition to the lack of experience of individuals.

A range of possible strategies have been developed in order to improve the use of information technology in the sector, particularly the capacity building of staff, in addition to the need of enhancing the work environment before moving into the use of ICT.

يتطور استخدام تكنولوجيا المعلومات بسرعة في جميع المجالات وقطاعات العمل، وبالرغم من ذلك فان استخدام تكنولوجيا المعلومات في صناعة التشييد يبقى مختلفة عن قطاعات سابقة، وذلك تبعا لمجموعة من العوائق بسبب الطبيعة الخاصة لهذا القطاع وعدم الوعي الكامل بالتطبيقات المتاحة والحاجة إلى التدريب للتمكن منها وما يتطلب ذلك من استثمارات.
