 There are many definitions of the image in critical studies. This term was not known in the Arab critical heritage nor in the classical Western critical heritage. The image gained its share of development in the concept, as it is considered the most prominent feature of the Arabic poem in general. Al-Jahiz mentioned the term photography in the third century AH. With his definition of poetry, Al-Jurjani mentioned it based on Al-Jahiz’s previous statement, and the concept of the poetic image continues to develop until it reaches Hazem Al-Qartajani in the seventh century AH, where we find him linking imagination to photography in defining .In the West, it was widely circulated by critics of Romanticism, whose proponents changed the concepts of the old classical school, whose proponents viewed the image as a type of ornament used by the writer to decorate his text. As we investigate the aesthetics of the image, we must uncover the various artistic patterns of the image, so that we look at each style or form from a special angle, and by the rhetorical image we mean the ancient graphic and creative 

     لقد تعددت تعريفات الصورة في الدراسات النقدية التراثية والمعاصرة ، فهذا المصطلح لم يكن معروفاً في التراث النقدي العربي ولا في التراث النقدي الغربي الكلاسيكي، وقد تطوّر مفهوم الصورة ، وأصبحت أبرز ملامح القصيدة العربية بصفة عامة، وقد ذكر الجاحظ مصطلح التصوير من خلال تعريفه للشعر، وذكره الجرجاني مستنداً إلى رأي الجاحظ، ويتواصل تطور مفهوم الصورة الشعرية حتى يصل إلى حازم القرطاجني في القرن السابع الهجري، وقد وجدناه قد ربط مصطلح التخييل بالتصوير في تعريف الشعر. أمّا في الغرب، فقد شاع تداوله على ألسنة نقاد الرومنتيكية، التي غيّر أصحابها مفاهيم المدرسة الكلاسيكية القديمة التي كان أصحابها ينظرون إلى الصورة على أساس أنها نوع من الحلي يستخدمها الكاتب ليزيّن بها نصه. ولا بد ونحن نبحث في جمالية الصورة من الكشف عن الأنماط الفنية المتنوعة للصورة، بحيث ننظر إليها في كل نمط أو شكل من زاوية خاصة، ونقصد من الصورة البلاغية الأنماط والوسائل البيانية والبديعية القديمة، كالتشبيه والاستعارة والكناية والبديع.
